St. Louis, MO – On behalf of the Bosnian community in St. Louis, the St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. Scholarship Fund announces nine (9) recipients of its 2015-2016 scholarships. Selected for their academic achievement, financial need, strong leadership, and engagement in the community, the scholars will receive up to $1,000 per year for up to four years to pursue high school, or undergraduate degrees.
“The academic and extracurricular accomplishments that this group has demonstrated are absolutely remarkable,” said Education Committee Chair Danielle Stevens. “They exemplify the qualities St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. values: persistence, determination, a love of learning, and a desire to help others. We have high hopes for each St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. scholar and also commend all of the high-achieving students who applied.”
This year’s scholars boast impressive academic credentials and strong teacher recommendations. All have participated in civic or community service throughout the year and most of them participated in community service projects that have lasted longer than two years.
This year St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. received over 40 qualified applications for the scholarships from United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina. With funds available for five scholarships, three for the applicants in Bosnia and Herzegovina and two for the applicants in St. Louis, and aid from our generous donors who offered to privately fund four additional scholarships through St. Louis Bosnians, Inc., created nine scholarships in total. It is important to note that the funds for the initial five scholarships were secured through last year’s Run for Bosnia, 5k run/walk event that gathered over 400 participants and volunteers. This year’s St. Louis Bosnians, Inc. Run for Scholarships will take place on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Tower Grove Park.

Muhamed Talovic
Muhamed Talovic was born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996 and moved to the United States in 2000. He is starting his sophomore year at Saint Louis University, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. While being a full time student, Muhamed is an intern at City Garden Montessori Charter School. He monitors child-care safety and development in order to promote an adequate learning environment for children. He also controls traffic to keep order on the roads while aiding the children in arriving and leaving the school safely. He also acts as a teacher’s assistant in the classrooms, helping explain scientific, mathematical, historical, and literature concepts to children 3-14 years of age. Muhamed is a co-founder of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Student Association (B-HSA) at Saint Louis University. He has helped develop and edit the group’s constitution. Muhamed is in good academic standing and is maintaining a grade point average above 3.0. Muhamed is an active member of the Bosnian Islamic Center where he has learned how to read the Arabic language and has successfully read Qur’an.
Edita Sabaredzovic
Edita Sabaredzovic was born in Ansbach, Germany in 1996. This upcoming school year, she will be a freshman at the University of Missouri – Columbia. Edita recently graduated high school, finishing with a 4.1 GPA. In high school, she was involved in several clubs including the National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, Student Council, and DECA. Edita was nominated for the National Society of High School Scholars. She also devoted a significant amount of time to volunteering. Her favorite volunteering opportunities included working with SPENSA (Special Needs Soccer Association), Special Olympics, Youth Summer Camps at Rogers Elementary, and the Shoebox Project.
Enis Memic (Private Scholarship Recipient)
Enis Memic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1997. He completed three years of high school in Sarajevo and spent his senior year of high school in St. Louis attending St. Louis Christian Academy on an athletic scholarship. Prior to his arrival in St. Louis, he played basketball for the Sarajevo-based Spars and the Bosnian U16 national team. Enis just returned from Greece where he represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the European U18 Division A Basketball Championship. Memic played a significant role in the Bosnian team’s success, which resulted in them winning fourth place overall in the tournament. He will be attending Murray State College this upcoming Fall.

Samir Halilcevic
Samir Halilcevic was born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995. He spent his childhood in Zivinice where he completed his middle school education, after which he continued his high school education in Zivinice’s High School. During his time in high school, he exhibited interest in math, physics, and informatics, ranking among the best mathematicians in the region. He received multiple awards and recognitions at math competitions of different levels. Samir is the proud recipient of multiple certificates and diplomas in the fields of physics, informatics, and the German language.
In May of 2011, Samir became a member of the board of Youth Bank, a program established by the Mozaik Foundation with the aim of increasing youth participation in the development of local communities. Over the course of three years and as part of the board, Semir volunteered his time and knowledge during the selection, realization, and monitoring of a number of socially responsible and useful projects led by young adults in his community.

Samir practices aikido and in his free time enjoys mountain biking. Currently he is studying Information Technology at the University of Tuzla.
Ammar Lidjan (Private Scholarship Recipient)
Ammar Lidjan was born in Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, where he finished his middle and high school education with great success. During his time in high school, he was a member of the student council at the Bihac School of Economics and he represented his school as a member of the Association of High School Students of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ASUBIH). Since his time in high school, he has been a member of a local volunteer service, through which he regularly volunteers by organizing athletic and cultural events, nature protection programs, humanitarian efforts, and similar activities.
After completing high school in 2013, Ammar went on to attend the University of Bihac, where he is studying economics (4+1 program). He is a member of the Student Union at his university and part of the Student Association of the College of Economics at University of Bihac. Last year, Ammar was a part of a group at this university who formed a youth non-profit “Pokret” Bihac, with aims to secure better conditions for students, a quality education for all, student rights, and general human rights. Through this organization, Ammar encourages collaboration among youth and youth activism in the local community.
Mensur Besirovic
Mensur Besirovic was born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996. He graduated from “Mesa Selimovic” Gymnasium in Tuzla this past May and enrolled full time at the University of Tuzla majoring in Information Technology. He is a “straight A” student and represented his high school at state competitions in physics, where he achieved formidable results.
For years, Mensur has been an active volunteer and activist in his community. Currently, he is a volunteer for several non-profits such as “Fondacija Tuzlanske Zajednice,” an organization for kids and young adults, “Osmijeh za Osmijeh,” a youth club of the “UHD Prijateljice” non-profit, and he is a member of the local “NO HATE” Tuzla team that operates under “Motus Adulescenti,” also a non-profit organization.
Mensur’s role in these organizations differ. In some, he is a regular member, while in others he is a coordinator, motivator, or coach. His education and community involvement allowed him to experience a wide variety of possibilities for advancement, while meeting new people and giving back to his local community, city and state.
Senka Causevic
Senka Causevic was born in Sarajevo in 1995. After completing middle school, she enrolled in Dobrinja Gymnasium and graduated with a 5.0 average (equivalent to 4.0 in the United States). Senka just completed her first year at the University of Sarajevo – College of Science studying microbiology with a grade point average of 9.9 (out of 10).
She was a former member of the debate team and a participant in numerous workshops and competitions. She actively collaborated with the Center for Cultural Dialogue. Senka was a participant of the U.S. Embassy Youth Leadership Program where she learned a great deal about leadership and volunteering. She volunteers with many different organizations, but particularly highlights her time working in the food pantry and with a conservation organization that works on afforestation projects.
Arza Grbic (Private Scholarship Recipient)
Arza Grbic was born in Gracanica, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995. She completed middle school and high school at “Dr. Mustafa Kamaric” Gymnasium in her hometown as a “straight A” student. She was a member of the IT club and the English language club through which she achieved impressive results at several competitions. Arza currently lives in Tuzla where she attends the College of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tuzla and is studying computer science and informatics. She has been volunteering at the local non-profit “Anea MG” since 2010, focusing on ecological, humanitarian, and educational programs.
Selmana Halilovic (Private Scholarship Recipient)
Selmana Halilovic was born in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2000. She completed her middle school education with “all A’s” and is currently enrolled at Elci-Ibrahim Pasina Medresa (high school) in Travnik. Selmana plans to enroll in university after she completes her high school studies.
